Today, the rare, delicious Dong Ding oolong tea from Taiwan is prized throughout the world. Its floral aroma and sweet aftertaste entice any first-time sampler to try one more cup, and the tea enjoys the name the ‘Fair Lady’.

However, few know that the tea is actually a specimen of a Wu Yi oolong tea strain that has been carefully selected from Wu Yi Mountain in Fujian province and re-planted in Taiwan.

That is a story of Dong Ding oolong tea that traces back to almost 400 years ago!

A young scholar called Lin Fang Chi came from Taiwan to pass the provincial exam held in Fujian and receive a government post. Lin was lucky enough and he passed the exam.

Upon returning, Lin hoped to bring his friends some gifts. Because he was too poor to afford the travelling expenses, he fellow villagers collected the money for his trip.

Almost immediately, he decided to bring some tea trees of the finest oolong tea, which the province was most famous for. He himself had tried the tea and was immediately amazed by the superb fragrance and delicate flavor. He wanted to offer his fellow villagers a new oolong tea species that could benefit them financially, as oolong tea was greatly valued in the market.

So, Lin bought some 30 oolong tea trees and set out on his trip back to Taiwan. Day in and day out, Lin and the villagers carefully cultivated their precious oolong tea trees. And a few years later, their tea leaves fetched a great price in the market, and made every family in the village a fortune.

Later, in a meeting with the emperor, Lin offered his new tea of Taiwan, which stunned the emperor with its deep and refreshing flavor. Since the tea was grown in high peaks of Dong Ding Mountain in Taiwan, the emperor renamed it ‘Dong Ding’, or ‘Frozen Summit’.

Over the centuries, Dong Ding oolong tea was refined, and now has a slightly different taste than Wu Yi oolong tea. But tea experts say that if you savor with ease, you can still find hints of similarity in between the two.

After all, the Dong Ding oolong tea – the ‘Fair Lady’ – has its ancestry in the Wu Yi Mountain.
